Okay, so I think I've figured out the opening and how to get Sam and Dean separated.
The cult kidnaps BOTH Sam and Dean and separates them into different rooms for preparation. Dean wakes up and, seeing that he's alone, figures that they must not have gotten Sam. He breaks out, makes a cursory search and doesn't find Sam anywhere he looks. He's running out of time and figures Sam must be still out there, probably looking for him. He breaks out and goes to the standard meet up spot and...no Sam. Goes back to their original motel and...no Sam. Goes back to the sight of his kidnapping and the Impala's still there. And then he realizes: his kidnappers must have Sam after all.
As an adjunct to this, they're going to have to move Sam; if they don't then Dean's going to know where to go to get him back and it won't take days. On the other hand, I can't spin this out for TOO many days, so it can't be that hard to find them either. So. What are the clues that Dean follows to get Sam back?
Hmmm. Okay, so:
1. He goes back to the place and finds some clue that leads him onward. (What clue?)
2. The cult sends someone after him to recapture or eliminate him. (how likely is this? Their main strength lies in keeping low profile and Dean didn't see anything important. Once they move Sam (and any other prisoners) they should be good to go)
3. Dean goes back to the place and they've left someone(s) there to see if Dean came back. Dean either captures and interrogates someone to try and find out where they took Sam (this could demonstrate how ruthless he is when it comes to Sam) or he stalks them and waits for them to lead him back to Sam (the agony of waiting, having to remind/reassure himself that Sam probably has time, the other men the cult took didn't die right away, Sam's strong, he's tough....etc.)
FOR ANYONE WHO MIGHT READ THIS: ANY THOUGHTS??
Either way, Dean finds his way to the temple. I think there needs to be relatively few acolytes and I think that, seeing as how they probably need to have Real Lives too, not all of them would be there at the same time. So...if there are, say, thirteen acolytes, maybe six are there are any one time? Gives Dean fewer people to kill/get rid of. The problem is that Sam's stubbornness in holding out until Dean can get there has tipped the balance of power and--unless Sam and Dean can stop it--the godling is going to come through.
Ooooh. Balance of power. If the power is NOT going to the godling, then it has to go SOMEWHERE. And if Sam is the conduit, then the power's going to pass through him. Into Dean. Which means, to save Sam, Dean could die. I don't think Sam should realize that right away, caught up in the ogodfuckmenow of having been tortured for days and having to talk Dean into fucking him. So Dean's finally going to do it, he's entering Sam and THAT'S when it occurs to Sam. So he's like "Wait, wait...no, stop..." Dean: "WTF? Sam. You'll die." Sam's hysterical at this point; he laughs. "Yeah, but if we do this, the power comes back. Through me. You could die." And of course, to Dean, no fucking choice there. So he keeps going. Power comes down, kind of fries them both, but they live. And Sam wants to know how Dean did it; how Dean channelled the power and didn't die. And Dean's like, "Fuck, Sam, I don't know. You know I know jack shit about magic. I just held on. I just held onto you."
Which opens the door to the incest/sex/love/relationship part.
Must. Think. Of. Title. Kind of liking "Golden Apples and Broken Boughs" but that's kind of long and weird.
Also, for those of us who are double dipping at other sites, I've mirrored this journal at insanejournal as dogsofwar.

Date: 2007-08-14 09:21 pm (UTC)I love the idea of Dean stalking someone the most, because, when it comes to Sam in danger, he has no patience, so it would be really hard for him to sit still and wait it out, to know that there is someone right in front of him responsible for taking Sam away from him, but not able to do anything about it. But that's just my opinion ^^;;

Date: 2007-08-15 01:34 am (UTC)I like the idea of Dean stalking someone, but I don't know if he can exhibit that kind of patience. Especially with Sam in danger. All the other men captured by the cult ended up dead.

Date: 2007-08-15 01:32 am (UTC)Yes, I agree that the problem would be Dean exhibiting the patience to stalk someone who knows where Sam is. He's not patient at the best of times. At the same time, I don't know that I want to turn him into Charles Bronson, killing every human that gets in his path.
Dean has partial knowledge; he knows that the cult has been kidnapping and killing men. He doesn't really know what for, at this point.

Date: 2007-08-15 01:16 am (UTC)I like #3 but truthfully it is kind of unlikely to leave someone to wait for Dean. So, I'd have to say #1 as the most likely. Sam finds some way to leave a clue. I love Sam (or Dean) being Smart. And there is canon precedence in a couple of episodes where they have plans of what to do if separated. So that one seems more likely & we get the unspoken bond/hunter smarts thing working.
As to title, I like that title.

Date: 2007-08-15 01:30 am (UTC)The problem with Sam being the one to leave a clue is that Sam has no idea where they're taking him, so the only clue HE could leave would be a sign that he's still alive.
The title is growing on me.

Date: 2007-08-15 01:40 am (UTC)As to Sam leaving a clue, Sam is smart & figures out where they are going. Maybe he even has to write it in his own blood?
With all that said, I'm sure you will make it wonderful no matter what path you choose.
