If I'm the cult leader, I wouldn't want to leave a solo person behind to potentially be overpowered & then expose the group. I would want to just move my operation & cut my losses. Strength in numbers. If they did leave someone behind, he/she would be completely hidden & would shoot Dean on sight with a rifle. Clean/solves problem.
As to Sam leaving a clue, Sam is smart & figures out where they are going. Maybe he even has to write it in his own blood?
With all that said, I'm sure you will make it wonderful no matter what path you choose.
