It's interesting that you would say #3 is unrealistic since that's what I (if I were the cult leader) and The Roommate (asked separately) would do. Dean has at least marginal knowledge of the cult and is very likely to come back looking for his brother, putting him in a position to be either recaptured or killed, failing that.
The problem with Sam being the one to leave a clue is that Sam has no idea where they're taking him, so the only clue HE could leave would be a sign that he's still alive.
