Another piece of Save As, the Die Hard Epic O' Doom. *sighs* It's my own fault for putting DH2 in the TiVo, I know it. This happens just after John, Holly and kids find out about the hostage situation.

John." Holly grabs his sleeve, pulling him up short. The line of her mouth seems cruel to him and he wonders if it was always like that or whether he just thinks so now because the divorce has left him bitter. "This is exactly what I'm talking about with you." She tilts her head back toward the living room, where Lucy is looking at him with mingled worry and annoyance. Jack is nowhere to be seen. "You involve yourself and these things and it's none of your business. Let someone else handle it. Your family is right here and you're losing them, John. Every day, you're losing them."

She's right. John knows she's right. But all he can think about is Matt's face, bloodied and flattened to the glass, the gun up against his face.

"So you want me to lose someone else too? When maybe I could've done something to stop it?"

Holly huffs. "John…he's just some kid whose life you saved once. When are you going to learn you can't save everyone?"

John wets his dry lips. He's seen enough brains blown out in his time to know what they look like; he can't imagine that happening to Matt. Doesn't want to. "I can try."

"John." Holly shakes his arm urgently. "That's your daughter in there. Your son. Compared to that, who is this boy to you?"

"He's…" John peters out, not sure how to end that sentence. He's the guy I'm fucking? My boyfriend? The guy I love?

He doesn't know. He doesn't know how to say all the things Matt is to him, other than to recognize that last bit is true. He knows because this is how it felt every fucking time Holly was in trouble, like he can't breath right and his heart's going to explode. He wishes it felt more like a surprise, to suddenly know that he loves Matt, but it doesn't. He knew it. He just couldn't cop to it.

"He's what?" Holly demands impatiently.

"He's someone I can't stand to lose," John answers finally. "Look, Holly, tell the kids I'm sorry…"

Holly holds up her hands. "I'm not telling them anything, John. I'm sure they already know where they rank on your list of priorities."

It's not fair but life's not fucking fair. Nothing that John can do about it now.

He goes.

Notes to self:

The way John finds out Matt's there (verifiably) is that the terrorists use him as a human shield, pushing him against the plate glass doors.

I really wanted this to be the moment that John came out to them, that he said something definitive about his relationship with Matt, but John defied my efforts to do so. The things I came up with (that John wouldn't say) are pretty much all the things John thought. But he wouldn't say it and now I'm thinking John's going to have to come back with Matt LATER and come out to them all.

I'm going to need to explain why Holly's there. Or I'm going to have to move McClane and Farrell. Holly's parents apparently live in DC, which is close enough if I want to wank it, for them to be down there. Depending on how LONG this is after Christmas. In fact, it would fit in with the first two movies (mas o menos) if I set it after Christmas but before New Year's. In fact, I could end it with a New Year's kiss. Which... OKAY DON'T JUDGE ME. *facepalm* Sometimes I like my schmoop. Anyway. But that doesn't solve my original problem of how to get Matt and John down to DC. I was thinking they could be moving Matt out of his apartment, but Matt just announced he was thinking about moving up to NYC, so it's WAY too soon for him to have a place yet. So. Okay. Maybe Holly was at her parents' place and she wanted to get together and have a family dinner (and maybe discuss Lucy's concerns about John hanging out with Matt and that Matt may be unstable?) So Matt offers to put John up at his place while they're down there, etc. YES. That works. Awesome. Okay.

So. After the situation is over, after Matt has his crying jag, John asks Matt if he thinks he can do this one thing with John. Make this one stop. And so they go back to Holly's parents' place, and, with Matt there with him, comes out to Jack, Lucy and Holly. Then they go back to Matt's and John won't let him get out of bed for at least a day. Matt can't believe John did all that. John's deprecating; oh, he's handled terrorists before, blah blah...and Matt says no, he can't believe McClane just told his whole family about them like that. John admits it was a lot harder than the terrorists.

...this is looking like two arcs. One is the immediate post-Christmas stuff and the hostage situation and the other would be the family fallout, the family thinking Matt's influencing John somehow and John getting Matt back into therapy with the therapist that helped him way back when.

WHY KINK, WHY??
